The Dean of the College of Arts, Prof. Dr. Ali Abdul-Amir Sajet, inaugurated one of the college’s libraries, which now bears the name of the esteemed historian Salah Al-Khorasan, in the presence of the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Cultural Affairs, Dr. Arif Al-Saadi
Dr. Al-Saadi stated that the College of Arts performs admirable work by honouring distinguished figures through the naming of university halls and libraries after them. This approach immortalises their legacy, linking educational spaces with the memory of great scholars. He added that he was pleased and grateful to the College of Arts for organising a conference on Professor Khorasan, an important initiative supported by the government. He encouraged other universities to do the same
The Dean of the College of Arts extended a welcome to Professor Khorasan’s family, who were present at the library’s inauguration ceremony. He went on to say, “We are honoured to inaugurate this library in his name.” “It is a hallmark of vibrant nations to honour their intellectual leaders and icons.” He emphasised the significance of honouring intellectual figures and announced that, in partnership with the Rewaq Baghdad Center, the College will hold a conference next Thursday on Professor Khorasan’s ideas. The event will take place at the College of Mass Communication, University of Baghdad.
Professor Salah Al-Khorasan, an Iraqi historian from Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf, was born in 1955 into a family with a strong tradition of scholarship and religious observance. He spent his formative years in Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf before relocating to Baghdad, where he completed his secondary education in 1978. Due to the prevailing political circumstances, he relocated to Lebanon in 1981, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree from the College of Arts at Beirut Arab University. Al-Khorasan was a lifelong opponent of the Ba’ath Party regime and authored numerous significant works of literature, beginning in 1987. He returned to Iraq after 2003 and passed away in 2022 after battling a terminal illness
In conclusion, the inauguration of a library named after Professor Salah Al-Khorasan by the College of Arts serves to honour his significant contributions as an Iraqi historian. This initiative highlights the significance of acknowledging eminent scholars within academic contexts, while simultaneously facilitating the organisation of a conference to examine his contributions, thereby encouraging other institutions to similarly commemorate their intellectual leaders
